Week 7 of Marathon Training

Week 7 is completed! I had to tweak the training plan a little, as I was going to be flying all day Saturday.  I decided to do my Saturday run on Friday, and just double up on that day.  They were both easy and felt pretty good.   Continue reading

hiking and speed work

My husband and I decided to go for a hike yesterday. We have done it before, and you end up at the top of a mountain at a campground.  The views are incredible.  But it is tough.  It is about 3.5 miles up, and about 1800 feet in elevation.  On the way up you can see incredible views of the coastline.  When you reach the campground there are more trails, and we explored another one for about half a mile, to get to a nice even four miles.  We decided we need to head back and camp up there to explore the other trails.  Continue reading

too fast a pace = failed work out?

That’s the question.  I ran my tempo run this morning, and my pace per mile was way too fast for it.  On the cards was a 5 mile tempo run, and a warm up and cool down of one mile each.  I was nervous going into it.  I don’t know why, I wanted to hold a 9:00-9:09 min/mile and I have done this many times, I have run half marathons faster.  I think it was because I haven’t run that fast for quite a while and wasn’t sure if I would be able to. the day after speedwork

I did my first speed session of my training plan yesterday.  I was so nervous going into it.  I didn’t want to get out of bed, as it was raining, but I knew if I didn’t go first thing in the morning it wouldn’t happen.  I woke up at 5:30am, had a cup of coffee and a banana then headed outside.  The previous night I had gotten everything ready for my run: my water bottle, my Cliff energy gel (just incase) and my Garmin.  I decided to set my Garmin to be ready to run intervals, and set it for 12 x 400m repeats. Week 5 of Marathon Training

Week 5 complete!  Very happy with how my training is going so far.  However, I have only ever run an easy run.  It is a lot easier for me to get out of bed in the morning when I know I don’t need to hit certain paces.  Maybe I need to say to myself, before speed/tempo runs, that it doesn’t matter about the pace, just get out there!

I’ve also haven’t done any strength workouts! Or yoga!  I stretch a little after every run, but I really need to work on getting at least some yoga happening during the week.

So, here is what I have done for the week: Continue reading

Drills – improve form and speed

One thing I have decided on is that if I want to get faster I need to get serious.  That means not just going out for a run, but actually making into a proper workout.

I have been reading up on drills.  Drills are meant to help improve form and speed, something I definitely need to work on.  Therefore, I am going to add some of these before my SOS (something of substance) runs, meaning speed/strength and tempo runs.  Continue reading
